Project Description

The Fighting Bradfords

Jan – March 2017

This project began in 2015 with New Writing North supporting Durham County Council in finding a writer to write a play telling the story of the ‘Fighting Bradfords’, four brothers who between them, during the First World War, won two Victoria Crosses, a Distinguished Service Order and two Military Crosses, with three of them paying with their lives.

We were invited to be part of the project in December 2016 and in January 2017 we edited down the full script of The Fighting Bradfords, written by Carina Rodney, so that it could be performed on the day of the unveiling of Roland Bradford’s Victoria Cross stone opening in the new Memorial Garden in Witton Park, County Durham and the new statue by sculpture Ray Lonsdale, a day where the community came together with the family of the Bradford brothers to honour the past.

A collaborative performance project working with Bishop Auckland College, St. John’s School & Sixth Form Centre and W.A.S.H. Youth Theatre.
